Argyrosomus regius

Meagre is an excellent fish which enjoys local renown; this migratory and predatory fish can, in some cases, reach a length of 1 metre and a weight of more than 50 kg.

Its lean, firm flesh, similar to that of sea bass and said by some connoisseurs to be even more delicate, makes it an excellent alternative to large bass.
Big fish weighing 15 to 50 kg are particularly impressive when displayed for sale and offer reasonable value for money.

In Europe, meagre only breeds in the Gironde estuary. Caught at the beginning of the season in the Basque country, Arcachon and Royan , it migrates during the summer to the warm waters of southern Brittany before returning to the Gironde .

While small meagre can be caught by trawling, larger fish are mainly caught using lines or gillnets. Some fishermen use the Ikejime method to slaughter the fish they catch.
